(190 km from Muscat and 40 km from Nizwa)

Bahla Fort justifies all superlatives. the largest, the oldest in the country. Its presence is attested from before Islam, but the archaeological excavations undertaken in the "qasiba" (citadel) date back to around the year one thousand. Bahla's heyday is in the 12th/13th century when the city dominated most of the country. Revamped over the centuries and finally restored in 1992, for 20 years, the 9000 m² complex is fascinating and impressive. The fort has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
